"The English Syllabus for Years 1 to 10 is derived from the P-10 Language Education Framework (1989), The National Statement on English for Australian Schools (1993), The National English Profile (1993), theories about language learning and development, responses to draft syllabus materials, and the best of current practice in schools.   The Syllabus draws together, in a coherent whole, major components of English curriculum development. These are: a functional view of language, fields of study that influence English curriculum, English curriculum approaches that are responsive to the needs of society and of students, and continuity in curriculum organisation for English language learning." The planning guide has been compiled to assist student teachers in the preparation of teaching plans for practice teaching throughout their course. It enhances and reflects on the National Competency Framework for Beginning Teaching. The five areas of competence covered by this framework are "Using and developing professional knowledge and values; communicating, interacting and working with students and others; planning and managing the teaching and learning process; monitoring and assessing student progress and learning outcomes; reflecting, evaluating and planning for continuous improvement."

Provides a description of the seven main intelligence areas as proposed by Howard Gardner - verbal linguistic, logical mathematical, visual-spatial, body-kinaesthetic, musical-rhythmic, interpersonal, intrapersonal - together with an idea generator which lists practical ways of applying each of these areas in terms of "remembering", "understanding", "creating", "applying" and "evaluating".

The establishment of a positive teacher-student relationship is considered to play an essential role in students' academic achievement and behaviour. Positive relationships between teachers and students are considered to be even more important for student success than interpersonal relationships with other students.

Murphy targets "a middle ground comprehensible to teachers who want to extend their own intuitions about language, but who are not looking (at this stage) for the immense detail and complication a full linguistic analysis might offer".

Christie explains the term "functional grammar" in terms of a "set of options" and it's concern with texts in their contexts of use as well as making meaning. The contributions made by clause, phrase and group and word structure to a text are covered briefly.

This article emphasises the importance of oral communication for second language learners in general and provides strategies for facilitating communication. The article also includes a series of strategies for teaching Aboriginal students.

The traditional ways of eradicating error "The Error Hunt" are discussed together with the dilemmas raised.
